Easter Hike & Critter Hunt

Nick and I took a six mile hike yesterday ending with sunburns, sore everything, and about a hundred pictures.  Here are some of my favorites.

We came across this fellow (or lady) early in the hike.  He was lurking in the grass just off the trail and looked like he was ready to pounce.  Scared the crap out of us as we didn't see him until we were practically on top of him.  He wasn't huge but he was of adequate size.

Lots of wild hogs yesterday which is not the norm.  There were several families out foraging

This picture doesn't really demonstrate how huge this hog was.  He was quite a distance from us and looked like a cow from where we were standing.

There were several smallish younger gators in this area and they all had these really nice colors.

We got about two feet from this small guy who was napping by the shore.  He mostly ignored us but just as we started to move away, he took off into deeper water.

Mama and baby.  Dad was behind the grass.

Baby.

Some bird watchers we passed on the trail alerted us to this eagle's nest.

Another case of scale not necessarily transfering to the photo.  This bird was HUGE!

Another family but this child was a little older.

The raccoons were out and about in force.

This friendly little hog was in one of the parking areas as we were leaving and I was able to walk right up to him.  He just trotted around snorting happily.

One of three birds we saw in the process of eating a fish.  This was the only one I was able to get a picture of.

  1. Total nature film! Seeing those baby birds with their parents is really cool. Re: your hog friend - Pumba, perhaps? Relative to the size of the bird, that fish is a huge meal, but, according to Norman Bates, "birds really eat a tremendous lot."
